On Sunday upon my return to Spain we were taking the bus back from Madrid to Cáceres and naturally having been up since 5 am I slept for a significant portion of the journey. When I woke up however I was shocked to be greeted by large wet snowflakes falling a

nd sticking for that matter across the Spanish countryside. As we continued toward Cáceres despite expectations for it to eventually turn to rain, or just stop altogether, the snow continued to intensify all the way into a Cáceres that I could barely even recognize. The snow forced the bus to take an incredibly circuitous route to the bus station and all the while driving at 10mph at the most. There was probably 2 inches of snow on the roads and on the way into the city we saw two buses that had slid into ditches, at least one person getting a tow from the police, and at least one person who had pulled over to put chains on their tires, not to mention half of the city outside playing in it, adults and children alike. All of this for 3 inches of snow in one day, it was baffling to me, surely they at least got dustings here occasionally it might be a big deal that there was this much but i couldn't be that big a deal.
Not true. Apparently this is the first time that snow has accumulated in 25 years and it was the most snow in like 30. The people in my university classes who are my age said that t

hey have seen snow once in their lives in Cáceres and it didn't even stick on the ground. As we walked back to our houses from the bus station we saw people and having snowball fights, building snowmen, and even just taking pictures in front of the snowy scenes. It was like the entire city was completely entranced and paralyzed by this. The buses weren't running, no one dove more than 10mph anywhere, and that was only if they even were driving, which very few people were. The other half of the people that weren't out playing seemed to have holed themselves up in their homes almost as though they were afraid to leave.
It was amazing to see the city covered in snow especially since it took basically the storm of the century to make it happen but regardless cool pictures and cool sights. Sadly we still had school the next day since it rained overnight, destroying the winter wonderland that ever so briefly was Cáceres.
Ross - Great pictures! How funny to see a palm tree w/ snow! Love, Mom
